How to Fix a Slow Computer

Learn How To Fix Slow Computer

Be careful when updating programs

It seems there is a new  update 2-3 times a day for programs on my computer. I don’t usually update the day it is ready to install. I usually wait a day for any problems to be found and fixed brfore I try to update. This gives the company 24 hrs of people running the update and sometimes crashing and failing and generally making a mess of the poor guys computer. If you are one of the one who waits, you can avoid some of this hassle. Do NOT use this as an excuse to avoid ever installing updates though. Wait 24-48 hrs and then do it!

Rules for updates.

1. Create a Windows Restore Point

2. Turn off any anti-virus, anti-spyware, and security suit programs. Close any open programs too

3. Always update windows before running any program updates. And restart the system

4. wait 24-48 hours before installing to program updates (do step 2. after restarting following windows updates)

If you have any problems, use the Restore to roll back to your last good restore point created in step 1.

Be careful when you download stuff!

I stay away from sites that offer free downloads for screensavers and wallpaper. They are famous for installing viruses and spyware on your system. Big name sites like tucows.com and download.com are safe to use. They scan there files regularly for infections.

One of my TOP picks to bring life to any computer would be to add more memory to your system! For most users XP will run well with 1GB of memory and flies with 2GB. XP will always be slow on less than 1GB. I would only run Vista and Windows 7 with 2GB or more of memory. So, if you have tried the steps listed here to tune your computer and it still seems slow, check your memory capacity.

I recently had a friend that clicked on a popup that told him he might be infected with a virus.

Please don’t do this if you know it is not your own anti-virus software telling you. It is most likely a popup from the page you are on. It is an attempt to get you to download a piece of software that usually is a fake scanner. It tells you are infected with xxxx.virus or whatever and tells you fpr a mere $29 their software can help clean your system. Odds are they are lying. You probably are not infected at all.

If you have AVG (free) installed and Windows Defender, you should not be clicking on these popups. Just hit the big X on the popup window and then navigate off the site. Or better yet close the current browser window and open a new one.
